“Orange Navel Late”

The Navel Late Orange (also known as Lane Late) is a newly introduced variety: in fact, it comes from a bud mutation of the Washington Navel. The Navel Late orange tree is characterized, among other things, by an upright posture, a high or medium vigor and the presence of a fairly compact crown.
They are also easily recognized by the typical leaves with a long and wide side and a fairly vivid green color. From the actual planting to the first harvest, three to four years can pass, since these trees do not bear fruit immediately but need a period of adaptation and growth.

The main characteristics of Navel Late oranges
Navel Late oranges take their name from the two fundamental aspects that characterize them: they are in fact navel oranges (therefore equipped with a navel, that typical swelling on the lower part of the fruit, determined by the presence of a second small undeveloped fruit). Because they begin to ripen later than the other varieties, that is, from the month of February, and also have a high persistence that allows them to remain on the tree until late in the year.

The shape of these oranges is generally spherical or hemispherical, they have a fairly robust stem, while the orange peel is less wrinkled and smoother, less thick and crossed by fairly pronounced and long furrows up to well over half of the fruit, compared to the Washington Navel variety (from which they derive). These oranges are rich in juice and soluble solids. Navel Late oranges are also chosen by producers for their late nature, which allows them to considerably extend the duration of the season, with an impact mainly on the economy and employment.
