Description

“Neapolitan Vesuvius Bean”

The “Vesuvius Beans” are produced on the slopes of Vesuvius: it is a volcanic soil rich in minerals and a few steps from the sea, so it is always touched by a light sea breeze. These geographical features have greatly favored the quality of the beans grown here, which are particularly appreciated for their remarkable tenderness and very characteristic flavor.
The plant, which can reach a length of 30-40 cm and contains up to 10-12 pods, is famous and highly appreciated also because it is a fine example of biodiversity, since the broad bean is one of the legumes that most naturally releases nitrogen into the soil, making it more fertile. For this reason, the farmers of Vesuvius cultivate this plant in the vineyards, in the orchards, but above all before the cultivation of the Piennolo DOP tomato and other summer vegetables.
Broad beans are a very characteristic food throughout the Neapolitan region: eaten fresh, they are part of the ritual foods of Lent.
